Decoding Digital Dependency: What? Why? How?
decode
to discover the meaning of information given in a secret or complicated way
Cambridge Dictionary
Decoding Digital Dependency is the process of identifying and dismantling the complex behaviors and patterns that tether us to our screens.
While we perform the physical act (such as doomscrolling), our psychology is being shaped and manipulated by platforms designed to exploit human behavior.
We can break the chain only when we become aware of what’s working against us and truly get to know ourselves.
Start by asking yourself the following three questions:
What do I gain from being online? (Am I actually getting value, or am I just stuck in a habit because it's the easiest thing to do?)
What physical and psychological urge do I feel to scroll? (Is it the low-effort flick of my thumb, or the obsessive search for what I’ll see next?)
Can this feeling be replaced by something else? (Is there another low-effort movement I can do when I’m bored that doesn’t lead to a screen?)
Beyond surface-level solutions (grayscale screens, app blockers, digital detoxes) lies a much larger conversation about how we relate to and use technology.
